Intellectual and Developmental Disorders

Intellectual development disorder (IDD) is a neuro-developmental disorder that causes problems with intellectual tasks. Children with intellectual development disorder have trouble with things like learning, communicating, thinking rationally, making judgments, and planning. They often struggle in school and may also have problems with friends and day-to-day tasks like bathing or getting dressed. They might seem to be acting out, but really the problem is that they don’t understand what behavior is appropriate.

  • Any time there are concerns with a child’s development it is important to ensure the child’s hearing has been evaluated by a pediatric audiologist. In South Dakota, a child’s hearing can be evaluated for free through South Dakota Services for the Deaf (SDSD)
  • Any time there are concerns with a child’s development it is important to ensure the child’s vision has been evaluated by a developmental optometrist or ophthalmologist.
